Cathode rays:

  1. Cathode rays played an important role in discovery of electrons.
  2. The cathode rays consist of negatively charged particles known as electrons.
  3. Since these rays emerge out of negatively charged electrode called cathode, these rays are called cathode rays.
  4. Cathode rays can ionize gases and pass through metal foils.

Thus,

Cathode rays area beam of electrons travelling from cathode to anode.
