The centromere is the area of primary constriction seen in each fully condensed chromosome.
It divides the chromosome into two identical sections, or “arms” called chromatids.
Both of the chromatids are connected at the centromere which is necessary for the movement of chromosomes at anaphase.
Any damage to the centromeric region will result in disruption in the chromosomal movement of this chromosome towards opposite poles during the anaphase stage of the cell division.
