Solution

  1. Chromatography is a method based on the difference in the rate of adsorption of various components of a mixture on a suitable adsorbent.
  2. There are two phases in a chromatographic technique: Mobile phase and stationary phase.
  3. In this process, the mixture of substances is applied onto a stationary phase which may be a solid or a liquid.
  4. A pure solvent, a mixture of solvents, or a gas is allowed to move slowly over the stationary phase.
  5. The components of the mixture get gradually separated from one another.
  6. Chromatogram: It is the pattern formed on an adsorbent medium by the layers of components separated by chromatography.
