Define democracy . Give reason for its popularity

It is a form of a governmnet in which the rulers are elected by the people of the country. Democracy can be defined as government 'of the people, for the people and by the people'.

There are several reasons behind the popularity of democracy. Some of them are as follows:

1.Firstly, democracy is a government of the people where people get the opportunity to elect their own leaders.

2.The rights of the people are well protected in a democracy.People get the chance to fight if their rights are encroached.

3.People enjoy freedom in a democracy.They can express freely their ideas and opinions and even criticise the policies of the government.

4.The government in a democracy works for the interests and welfare of the people in general.They know that if they fail to fulfil the interests of the people they cannot remain in power for long.

5.Democracy provides equal justice to all people irrespective of class, caste or gender discriminations.
