Question

Define electric resistance of a conductor.

Open in App
Solution

  1. The obstruction offered to the flow of free electrons through the conductor is called the resistance of the conductor.
  2. On the application of potential difference, the free electrons begin to move in a particular direction and current flows through the conductor.
  3. However, the collisions between the free electrons, atoms and positive ions present inside a conductor hamper the motion of free electrons through a conductor and consequently, electrical resistance is developed.
  4. The SI unit of electrical resistance is "Ohm" which is denoted by "Ω"
