Question

Define equipotential surface .in case of single point charge and in a constant elctric field in z-direction why the equipotential surface about a single point charge are not equidistant

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Equipotential surface is a surface with constant value of potential at all points on the surface.
Electric potential at any point on the equipotential surface is same.
No work is required to move charge from one point on equipotntial surface to other point on equipotential surface.

Equipotential surfaces indicates region of strong or weak electric fields. Thus in strong electric field, the equipotential surfaces are closely spaced while in weak electric fields, equipotential surfaces are widely spaced. Thus close to charge the distance between the equipotential surface is less. If you move away from the charge the distance between equipotential surface are more. Thus the equipotential surface is not equidastance.
