  • The number of parts by mass, of the element which can displace or combine with 1.008 parts by mass of hydrogen or 8 parts by mass of oxygen or 35.5 parts by mass of chlorine is known as equivalent mass.
  • Equivalent mass of element ‘X’ = AtomicmassofX(n-factor)ValencyofX
  • Example - Equivalent mass of Magnesium = AtomicmassofMagnesiumValencyofMagnesium

Atomic Mass of magnesium(Mg) = 24 and its valency = 2

Therefore, the equivalent mass of Magnesium = 242=12
