The process by which a body of water becomes enriched in dissolved nutrients such as phosphates that stimulate the growth of aquatic plant life usually resulting in the depletion of dissolved oxygen.
Impacts of eutrophication on aquatic life:
(i) Algal blooms that block light from getting into the water and harm the plants and animals that need it.
(ii) If there is enough overgrowth of algae, it can prevent oxygen from getting into the water, making it hypoxic and creating a dead zone where no organisms can survive.
