Filtration: The process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid, by causing the latter to pass through the pores of a filter.
Filtrate: The clear liquid passes through the filter paper and collects in the beaker or a flask placed below. This clear liquid is called the filtrate.
The insoluble substance left behind in the filter paper is called the residue.
Examples: A precipitate of barium sulphate or silver chloride can be separated from water by the process of filtration.
In this case water will be the filtrate and the precipitate left behind on the filter paper will be the residue.
