Define infundibulum, isthmus, ampulla and ectopic pregnancy?

Fallopian tube & Ectopic pregnancy:

The fallopian tube is part of the female reproductive system in mammals. It is the female accessory duct and is called as known as the oviduct.

1. Infundibulum – It is a funnel-shaped structure that is present close to the ovaries. This part collects the ovum after ovulation. Such finger-like projections are called fimbriae at the edges near the ovaries to help in ovum collection.
2. Isthmus – It is the last part of the fallopian tubes. It generally has a narrow lumen and connects to the uterus.
3. Ampulla – Infundibulum also leads into a wider ampullary region. Here fertilization takes place.

Ectopic pregnancy –

1. It is also known as extrauterine pregnancy.
2. When a fertilized egg grows outside a woman’s uterus, somewhere else in their belly.
3. It can cause life-threatening bleeding and needs medical care right away.
4. In more than 90% of cases, the egg implants in a fallopian tube causing tubal pregnancy.
