Definition of ions:

1. Atoms or molecules having net electrical charge because of the gain or loss of electrons are known as ions.

Types of Ions:

1. Cations: If atoms lose electrons then positively charged ions (cations) are formed.
2. Anions: If atoms gain electrons then negatively charged ions (anions) are formed.

Example:

1. Cations are ${\mathrm{Na}}^{+},{\mathrm{K}}^{+}$.
2. Anions are ${\mathrm{Cl}}^{-},{\mathrm{F}}^{-}$.
