Question

Define magnification of a spherical mirror. What will be the magnification in case of plane mirror?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Magnification produced by a spherical mirror is given by the ratio of the size of an image and the size of an object.

magnification=size of an image/size of an object

m=h'/h = -v/u

NOTE: m is -ve for the real image but +ve for the virtual image

Hence, magnification for the convex mirror is always +ve while for a concave mirror it depends upon the nature of the image.

Magnification is the ratio of image-size to the object-size. Since plane-mirror produces an erect image of the same size as of the object, its magnification will be equal to +1.
