Question

Define mechanical advantage of a machine. Why it has no unit?

Open in App
Solution

The mechanical advantage of a machine:

  1. Mechanical advantage of a machine is defined as the ratio of load to the effort.
  2. Mechanical advantage of a machine gives its efficiency.
  3. Mechanical Advantage = Load /Effort
  4. MA = F0Fi, where MA is the mechanical advantage, F0 is the output force and Fi is the input force.

Mechanical Advantage has no unit because it is the ratio of output force by input force. Both output and input have the same unit, which cancels each other.
