Define metallic bond. Iron has a body centred cubic unit cell with cell dimension of 286.65pm . calculate the density of iron [Atomic mass of Fe=56]

Open in App
Solution

Metallic bond is a type of chemical bond that occurs between atoms and metallic elements it is formed by the valance electrons moving freely through the metal lattice and positive charged metallic atoms .
Metallic bonds extended over the entire molecule structure.
Given Fe has bcc unit Z=2a=286.65pm,=286.65×1010cm,M=56NA=6.023×1023 atoms
Density is given by the equation, d=Z×Ma3×NA=2×56(286.65×1010)3×6.023×1023
d=8.08gcm3
