A mixture is a substance that is made up of two or more substances mixed together in any proportion. A mixture retains the properties of the substance from which it is formed.

Types of mixtures :

  1. Based on the physical state of substances present in the mixture, the mixtures are of following types :
  • Solid-solid mixture : For example a mixture of iron and sulphur filings
  • Solid -liquid mixture : For example a mixture of common salt in water.
  • Liquid Liquid mixture : For example a mixture of alcohol and water.
  • Solid-gas mixture : For example a mixture of dust particles and gases i.e. smoke
  • Liquid-gas mixture : For example aerated drinks
  • Gas-gas mixture : For example air

2. Based on the distribution of two or more substances that are mixed together, mixtures can be classified as :

  • Homogenous mixture : A mixture that has a uniform composition throughout is called a homogenous mixture. For example : salt in water
  • Heterogenous mixture : A mixture that has a non uniform composition throughout is called a heterogenous mixture. For example : chalk powder in water
