Question

Define molality (m). Calculate molality (m) of 10 gm of Glucose (C6H12O6) in 90 gm of water.

Open in App
Solution

Molality m=number moles of solutemass of solvent in kg
The molar mass of glucose is 6(12)+12(1)+6(16)=180 g/mol. The mass of glucose (10 gm) is divided with molar mass (180 g/mol) to obtain the number of moles of glucose.
Number of moles n =10 g180 g/mol=0.0555 mol
The mass of water = 90 g=90 g1000 g/kg=0.090 kg
Molality m =0.0555 mol 0.090 kg=0.62 m
