Solution

Answer:

  • The muscular tissue form the contractile tissue of the body and are made of muscle cells or muscle fibres.
  • Muscle cells are large and also elongated, hence called as muscle fibres.
  • The three types of muscular tissues are as follows:
  1. Striated Muscles
  2. Smooth Muscles
  3. Cardiac Muscles

Striated muscles

  • Striated muscles are also known as striped, skeletal, or voluntary muscles.
  • The striated muscle fibres cells are cylindrical, unbranched, long and non-tapering.
  • Striated muscle cells are multinucleated.
  • Striated muscles help in locomotion and all other voluntary movements of the body.

Smooth muscles

  • Smooth muscles are also known as unstriated, visceral, or involuntary muscles.
  • Smooth muscles occur as bundles of spindle-shaped cells or fibres.
  • These are held together by loose connective tissue. Each muscle cell is enclosed in a plasma membrane.
  • Smooth muscles do not contract by our will, so they are also called involuntary muscles.

Cardiac muscles

  • Cardiac muscles present in the heart show characteristics of both striated and smooth muscles.
  • Cardiac muscles are composed of branched fibres and the branches join to form a network.
  • The cardiac muscle fibre is surrounded by sarcolemma, a centrally located nucleus (i.e., each cell is uninucleate).
  • The contraction and relaxation of the cardiac muscles help to pump and distribute blood to different body parts.
