  • Oxidation : The addition of oxygen to a substance or removal of hydrogen from a substance is known as oxidation.

Example (1). C(s)+O2(g)CO2(g)

In this reaction carbon (C) is getting oxidised by addition of oxygen to form carbon dioxide (CO2).

(2). 4HCl(aq)+O2(g)2Cl2(g)+2H2O(l)

In this reaction hydrochloric acid (HCl) is getting oxidised by removal of hydrogen to form Chlorine (Cl2) gas.
