Question

Define reflection and refraction of light

Open in App
Solution

Reflection :

  1. Reflection is the phenomenon of bouncing back of light rays when it strikes an opaque surface.
  2. We can say that reflection is the phenomenon of change in the path of light without any change in the medium.
  3. The ray that is directed towards the reflecting surface is called the incident ray and the ray that recedes from the surface is called the reflected ray.
  4. The point where the incident ray hits the surface is called the point of incidence.
  5. A perpendicular drawn at the point of incidence is called normal.

6. In reflection, the angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection.

Refraction:

  1. It is the phenomenon of change in the path of light when it goes from one medium to another.
  2. The cause of refraction is the change in the speed of light when it goes from one medium to another.

3. When a light ray moves from a rarer medium to a denser medium, it bends towards the normal, and when it moves from denser to rarer, its bends away from the normal.
