Question

Define refractive index of a medium . Write two factors on which it depends

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
The absolute refractive index of a medium is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum (or air) to the speed of light in that medium i.e., n=cv.
The refractive index n is also defined as the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction:
n=sin isin r

Refractive index of a medium depends upon the following factors:

1.The wavelength of the light
2. Optical density
3. The refractive index of the surrounding medium.
