Question

define relative refractive index

Open in App
Solution

Dear student

When light ray is travelling from one medium (other than vacuum or air) to another medium then the value of refractive index is said to be relative refractive index

The relative refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is the ratio of the speed of light in medium 1 to that in medium 2. i.e., μ21 = v1/v2.
