1) By religion we mean, faith and worship of Gods by specific community in a country or state.

2) Caste and religion has had significant impact on Indian politics. From the late 1980s, both caste and religion became important factors in Indian politics.

3) Parties started appealing to caste and religious leaders to gain votes. Parties like the Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party were either formed on the basis of caste lines or was explicitly dedicated towards attracting votes from caste lines.

4) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) started to ask for votes on the basis of Hindu religious identity.
