Question

Define the resistivity of a conductor.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Resistance of a material is given by R=ρLA , where ρ is a constant called resistivity of the material, L is the length and A is the area of the conductor.
  2. Therefore, ρ=RAL
  3. If both the area and its length are unity then,

R=ρ

Therefore, resistivity is defined as the resistance offered by the conductor of unit length and unit area of the cross-section.
