Electrolysis: A process in which electric current is applied for a chemical reaction to take place which is an otherwise non-spontaneous reaction.

Non-Spontaneous reactions are reactions that do not occur on their own.

An external source of energy is required for a non-spontaneous reaction to take place.

Example: Electrolysis of water, $2{\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O}\left(\mathrm{l}\right)\stackrel{\mathrm{electricity}}{\to }2{\mathrm{H}}_2\left(\mathrm{g}\right)+{\mathrm{O}}_2\left(\mathrm{g}\right)$
