  • solid carbon dioxide, which sublimes at –78.5°C: is used as a refrigerant, and to create billows of smoke on stage shows. It is also called carbon dioxide snow.
  • It gets this name (Dry ice) because it does not melt into a liquid when heated; instead, it changes directly into a gas (a process known as sublimation).
