Solute: In an alcohol and water mixture, can alcohol be considered the solute?

Solute :

  • Solute is defined as the component of solution that is present in lesser amount than the solvent. For example, in a solution of sugar and water, sugar is the solute and water is the solvent as sugar is present in lesser amount than the water in sugar water solution.

Solvent :

  • Solvent is defined as the component of solution that is present in greater amount than the solute. For example, in a solution of salt and water, water is the solvent and salt is the solute as water is present in greater amount than the salt in sugar water solution.

Solution :

  • The homogenous mixture of solute and solvent is called solution. For example, brass, sugar water, etc.

Conclusion :

  • Alcohol can be considered as solute in alcohol and water mixture when the quantity of alcohol will be less than water.
