Solution

Change of state

On heating, the molecules of matter move rapidly and expand. Due to their continuous movement, while heating, they change from one state to another. This is known as a change of state of matter.

  • There are some solids that on heating, directly change into their gaseous state without going through the liquid state. The process in which a solid directly converts into its gaseous state on heating is called sublimation. The gaseous state of the substance obtained during sublimation is called sublime. The substance formed when a gas changes back into its solid state is called sublimate.
  • Example: Iodine, ammonium chloride, naphthalene, and camphor.

Therefore, the change of state from solid to gas is called sublimation.
