Define the Term Resistivity of Material?

Open in App
Solution

Resistivity of a Material:

  1. The ability to oppose the current flow in a conductor is the resistivity of a material.
  2. The electric field at any point within the wire is E=VLand the current density, j=iA, i is the current flow in the wire.
  3. Therefore, the specific resistance of the material of the wire is: ρ=Ej=VLiA=VAiLρ is the electrical resistivity, Lis the Length of the material of a conductor, A is the area of cross-section and R is the resistance.
  4. We know, Resistance, R=Vi, so resistivity can be written as ρ=RAL,
  5. Resistivity is the inverse of conductivity.
  6. Ohm-meter(Ωm) is the unit of Resistivity.
