Define the terms.

Cohesion and adhesion properties of water molecules

Open in App
Solution

Cohesion property of water molecules:

Cohesion is the ability of the water molecules to attract other water molecules due to hydrogen bonding between them.

Adhesion property of water molecules:

The ability of water molecules to stick to an unlike substance or attraction between unlike molecules is called the adhesion property.

Importance of Cohesion and adhesion properties of water molecules

The force created by cohesion i.e. cohesive force and the force created by adhesion i.e. adhesive force, both are responsible for the transport of water from the roots to the tips of the leaves in the plants. These forces create a transpiration pull on the water column.
