Thermodynamic system is a quantity of matter of fixed identity, around which we can draw a boundary . They may be fixed or moveable. Work or heat can be exchanged across the system boundary. Everything outside the boundary is called the surroundings.

Here a system having geometrical shape of a cylinder can be considered as a system.
Surroundings are not considered as a system.
