Question

Define thrust. What is the up thrust experienced by a balloon of volume 120m3 filled with hydrogen. The density of air = 1.140 kgm3 and density of hydrogen = 0.081kgm3 at room temperature. What is the maximum weight this balloon can lift? [3 MARKS]

Solution

Definition: 1 Mark
Problem: 2 Mark

1. Thrust is a force or a push. When a system pushes or accelerates mass in one direction, there is a thrust (force) just as large in the opposite direction.
2. Let densities of air and hydrogen be ρair =1.14 and ρhydrogen =0.081 respectively.

Let volume of balloon V= 120 m3

Net force on it = Bouyant Force – Gravitational Force

= V ρairg - V ρhygrogeng

= V(ρair - ρhygrogen)g

= V(1.14-0.081)g

=120(1.14-0.081)(9.81)

=1246.6 N

This is the maximum weight that can be carried by balloon.
