Question

Define torque. Derive the relation between angular momentum and torque.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Torque (τ): It is an moment of force, i.e. tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis.

τ = r × f
where r is the perpendicular distance from the axis of the rotation and f is the applied force.

For rotational motion, torque is given by :τ=Iα ...... (1)where, I=moment of inertiaα=angular accelerationWe know that for rotational body, angular momentum is conserved.L=Iω .....(2)where, ω=angular velocityAlso,α=dωdt ......(3)taking derivation of equation (2) w.r.t time,dLdt=Idωdt ......(4)from (3) & (4),dLdt=Iα .....(5)from equation (1) & (5)τ=dLdt
