  • The number of electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom, that take part in the formation of a chemical bond is known as valence electrons.
  • For example - Oxygen contains a total of 8 electrons, of which 2 electrons are in the inner orbital and 6 electrons are present in the outermost orbital, these are known as valence electrons.
