Question

Define valence electrons.

Open in App
Solution

Valence electrons are the number of electrons an atom must lose or gain to attain the noble gas configuration.

Electrons in the outermost orbit give us the valence electrons.

For example, sodium has an atomic number 11 and electronic configuration as 2,8,1. The outermost shell has an 1electron, so one valence electron is present in sodium.
