The combining capacity of an atom is known as its valency.
Valency of silicon:
The atomic number of silicon is 14.
The electronic configuration of the element is 2, 8, 4. According to the electronic configuration the valency is 4 because silicon can either gain 4 electrons or lose 4 electrons.
Valency of oxygen
The atomic number of oxygen is 8. Its electronic configuration is 2, 6. According to this configuration, oxygen must gain 2 electrons for attaining stability. Therefore, its valency is 2.
