Define volume percent of a solution.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Volume percent of a solution: The concentration of a solution by volume percent may be defined as the number of parts by volume of solute per 100part by volume of solution.
  2. %StrengthbyVolume=VolumeofsoluteVolumeofsolution×100
  3. For example, 20% alcohol solution by volume is prepared by diluting 20.0mLof alcohol to a volume of 80.0mL water.

Step-1: Volumeofsolution=Volumeofsolute+Volumeofsolvent

=20mL+80mL=100mL

Step-2: Substituting the values in the percent strength by volume formula, we get,

ConcentrationofSolution(byVolume)=20mL100mL×100=20%

Thus, the concentration of alcohol solution is 20% by volume.
