Define water divide. What are the different patterns of flow made by a river?
The water divide is an elevated region like a mountain or an upland distinguishing two drainage basins.
The four patterns of drainage are listed below
Dendritic
Where the river channels follow the terrain of the slope, dendritic patterns develop. The stream tributaries represent the branches of a tree, hence the term dendritic.
Rectangular
On a strongly-jointed rocky terrain, a rectangular drainage pattern develops.
Trellis
A river joined by its tributaries develops a Trellis pattern at approximately right angles. Here soft and hard stones occur parallel to one another and this way Trellis drainage pattern occurs.
Radial
The radial pattern emerges as streams flow from a central peak or dome-like structure in the various path.
