Question

Define work done by a force and give some examples of it

Open in App
Solution

Definition,

  1. The work done by a force is the product of the displacement and the component of the applied force of the object in the direction of displacement.
  2. When we push a block with some force ‘F’ the body moves with some acceleration, work is done.
  3. Work done is written as W=F.d and its unit is Joule(J) which can be defined as the amount of work done when a force of 1 Newton is applied to an object, as a result of which, it is displaced by 1 meter.

Example,

  1. Work is dependent on the angle between force and displacement so it is positive as well as negative.
  2. Certain examples of work done by a constant force of 2 Newtons on an object having a mass of 3 kilograms.
  3. Work done in rotating an object around a fixed point.
  4. Work done by applying a force of some constant magnitude, etc.
  5. Work done by gravitational force.
