Solution

The correct option is A (CF2Cl2)
Ozone layer

The ozone (O3) layer formed in the stratosphere, prevents harmful UV rays from entering the Earth’s surface, protecting humans from various negative impacts like skin cancer and snow blindness

Ozone depletion

The main cause of ozone depletion is the presence of ozone depleting substances (ODS) like chlorofluorocarbons (CF2Cl2), halons etc.

Mechanism of ozone depletion by CFC
  1. The chlorofluorocarbons (CF2Cl2) release free chlorine radicals due to UV exposure that act as a catalyst in converting ozone to molecular oxygen and chlorine monoxide radicals (ClO•).
  2. (ClO•) reacts with atomic oxygen and further breaks down to release free chlorine radical. This further acts on another ozone molecule, thus repeating the process.
Final answer

(D) CF2Cl2
