Democritus and Dalton both proposed a model of atom which sounded very similar. Both basically claimed that every element's fundamental unit (Atom) is indivisible . But Dalton proposed the model after a few centuries. So what was different between their models.

Democritus model was a part of his philosophy, he didn't verify it, well he couldn't, given that he didn't have access to the sophisticated tools that we have now. Whereas Dalton's postulates were based on observations and laws given earlier by Proust and Lavoisier. Law of constant mass and law of constant proportion were the stepping stone for Dalton's atomic theory.
So Dalton took a good calculated guess at his model.
