Question

Density of iron is 7.8 g/cc and induced magnetic field in iron is 1 T. The magnetic dipole moment of each iron atom is y×1024 (A m2). Calculate y.

Open in App
Solution

Induced magnetic field B = μ0M

M=Bμ0
= Magnetic moment per unit volume and Volume of one atom

=Weightof1MoleculeDensity×NANA

=Molecularweightρ×NA...(1)
So, Magnetic moment per atom
= M × Volume of one atom

=Bμ0×MolecularweightρNA

Putting the values

=1T4π×107

×56×103kg7.8×103kg/m3×6.023×1023

=9.50×1024Am2

Comparing this with y×1024
Hence y = 9.50.
