Question

Derive a relationship between MA,VRandη of a machine.

Open in App
Solution

Mechanical Advantage: It is the ratio of the load(L) to the effort(E).

MA=LE……..(1)

Velocity Ratio(VR): It is defined as the ratio of displacement of the effort(dE) to the displacement of the load (dL).

VR=dEdL………(2)

Efficiency η=Workdoneoutput(Woutput)Workdoneinput(Winput)

Consider a practical machine that overcomes a load (L) by the application of an effort (E) in time t. Suppose the displacement of effort be de and the displacement of load be dl

Now we can write

Winput=ExdeWoutput=Lxdlη=WoutputWinput=LxdlExde=LExdlde=LEx1dedl

From equations (1) and (2),

η=MAVRMA=ηxVR

Thus, the relationship between MA,VRandη of machines is MA=η×VR.
