Question

Derive equation of the ellipse in the form x2a2+y2b2=1

Open in App
Solution

Consider the co-ordinate system without any shifting or translation of axes and origin,
Consider the length of major axis be 2a,
We know that in an ellipse d1+d2=2a,
(x+c)2+y2+(xc)2+y2=2a(x+c)2+y2=2a(xc)2+y2
Squaring on both sides,
(x+c)2+y2=4a24a(xc)2+y2+x22xc+y2
Rearranging and squaring the terms gives,
x2a2+y2b2=1
