Question

Derive expression for the intensity of magnetic field at a point in end on position due to a short bar magnet.

Open in App
Solution

Consider a magnet NS of effective length 2l. The strength of each pole of this magnet is m. The magnetic field intensity at a point P on the axis of the magnet has to be determined. The distance of point P from the centre O of the magnet NS is d.
The intensity at point P due to the north pole (N) of the magnet.
B1=μ04πm(NP)2=μ04πm(dl)2 ........(1)
where NP=(dl)
The intensity at point P due to the south (S) Pole
B2=μ04πm(SP)2=μ04πm(d+l)2 .......(2)
Here SP=(d+l)
From Resultant intensity B=B1+B2 .......(3)
Substituting the values from equations (1) and (2) in equation (3)
B=μ04πm(dl)2μ04πm(d+l)2
B=μ0m4π[1(dl)21(d+l)2]
Or B=μ0m4π[(d+l)2(dl)2(dl)2(d+l)2]
Or B=μ0m4π⎢ ⎢d2+l2+2dl(d2+l22dl){(dl)(d+l)}2⎥ ⎥
Or B=μ04πm⎢ ⎢ ⎢4dl(d2l2)2⎥ ⎥ ⎥ [(dl)(d+l)=d2l2]
Or B=μ04π2Md(d2l2)2 [2ml=M magnetic moment]
If dl, for a small magnet
B=μ04π2Md3 Tesla
This is the required expression.
