Question

Describe a simple experiment to demonstrate that a liquid enclosed in a vessel exerts pressure in all directions.

Open in App
Solution

Procedure of experiment:
The experiment explained below demonstrates how a liquid enclosed in a vessel exerts pressure in all the directions.
  • Fill a larger plastic bottle or a can with water.
  • Set it on a horizontal surface.
  • Punch a few holes in the vessel at multiples places below the liquid surface.

Observation:
  • Through each of the hole, water starts coming out. This demonstrates that water exerts pressure on the side of the walls of the container.
  • If we cover any of the holes with our finger, we will experience a thrust.
