Describe an experiment to show that tap water contains dissolved gases.

Solution

A. Fill a round bottomed flask right up to top with tap water and insert a bung carrying the delivery tube so that the tube itself becomes completely filled with water.
B. In the set up of each flask collection tube should be full of water.
C. Heat flask by means of Bunsen burner. Bubbles of gas will be released from the water and travel into the test tube. Continue till boiling. About half a test tube full of gas will be collected in each case all of which has been displaced from solution by heating. It consist of air with high percentage of oxygen.
