Question

Describe an experiment to show that water has maximum density at 4C. What important consequences follow from this peculiar property of water? Discuss the importance of this phenomenon in nature.

Take a pycnometer and pour some water in it. Now note down the level of water at the pipe. Now change the temperature of the water from 0 to some say 10 . Now check the changes i the level of water. You can see that the level of water is minimum at 4. Now since mass is not changing so the density is maximum at 4.
Most important phenomenon is in winter lakes, river or sea freezes from the top. Now since ice is bad conductor of heat, after some thickness the heat from water can't be radiated to the atmosphere again that keeps the water below the ice in liquid form and warm. Because of the above phenomenon, lots of life can be supported inside the freezing lake and river in winter.
