Municipal corporations are set up in large urban areas or cities with population over 200,000. For effective administration of the area, the municipal corporation employs many people. Its administrative structure can be discussed as below:
1. The Municipal Commissioner is the head of the administrative staff. He is responsible for implementing all decisions taken by the corporation.
2. Every municipal corporation has a standing committee that makes all the policy decisions.
3. The corporation sets up separate committees to deal with different issues like water supply, garbage collection, health, transport, etc.
4. Each department has a head officer who assists the Municipal Commissioner like the Chief Medical Officer, Education Officer, etc.
5. The corporation also sets up ward committees, which consist of representatives from two or more wards.
All these workers are responsible for the effective functioning of an urban centre.
