There are three common ways to make a magnet,
1.-Stroke a piece of iron or steel with a permanent magnet to make a weak permanent magnet.
2.-Run a high current DC pulse through iron or steel to make a strong permanent magnet.
3.- wrap an iron rod in a coil of insulated wire and apply DC power to the coil to make a temporary magnet.
