Describe different types of phyllotaxy with the help of diagrams and give one example for each.

  • Phyllotaxy is the arrangement or distribution of leaves on the stem or its branches, that will help them to receive maximum sunlight to perform photosynthesis.
  • It is of three types alternate, opposite, and whorled.
1) Alternate- In which a single leaf arises from the node of a branch. For example, sunflower and mustard.
2) Opposite- In which two leaves arises from the node in opposite directions. For example- guava and calotropis.
3) Whorled- In which three or more leaves arises from the node. For example, lemonwood and mountain laurel.
